Description:
This activity explores the role of the Einsatzgruppen, or mobile killing squads, during the invasion of the Soviet Union -- often viewed as the initial stage of the implementation of the "Final Solution." First, students examine a secondary source which provides broad context regarding the actions of the Einsatzgruppen. Next, students consider additional primary sources to learn more about this topic. With this information, they listen to eyewitness testimony and identify how this adds to their understanding of the "Final Solution." Finally, students create a reflective journal entry which addresses the following:

What role did the actions of the Einsatzgruppen in the East play in the implementation of the "Final Solution?"

This activity is best suited for students studying the Holocaust at a deeper level for an extended period of time. The activity can be used alone or as an extension to Echoes and Reflections Lesson 5: The "Final Solution." http://goo.gl/hcbzjt
