Description:
Students will investigate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and identify the articles within, which protect humanity against forced labor. Students will listen to a clip of testimony from a Cambodian Genocide survivor, Danny Vong. As students watch his clip of testimony they will use the graphic organizer “Exploring Testimony” to collect information on what they hear and make interpretations of the survivor’s emotions as he tells his story. After a class discussion, students will connect additional articles within the UDHR to experiences that Danny Vong describes caused by forced labor. By investigating the UDHR in this way, students will develop their own views about the importance of this document as well as the consequences of human rights violations. They will then use this new knowledge to make connections to examples of similar experiences and violations across diverse periods in history.
