This activity will guide students through an exploration of the complex historical situation in the immediate aftermath of World War II, as depicted in the award-winning film, 1945. The film, based on a short story, is set in a remote Hungarian village in the immediate aftermath of the war, as the townspeople deal with the unexpected arrival of two Orthodox Jewish men who survived the Holocaust.

The activity includes historical documents, testimony clips from USC Shoah Foundation's Visual History Archive, clips from the film, and an excerpt from the short story the film is based on. Students interpret and evaluate the reactions of the townspeople upon the return of their former neighbors.
